Inter Miami has a new coach, but there is one question that many fans are asking: why Cristian “Kily” González?
The Argentine coach arrives at a club with enormous expectations, a superstar in Lionel Messi, and a team that is still fighting near the top of the Eastern Conference.
Yet his appointment has generated plenty of discussion because González does not arrive with the kind of coaching résumé that would immediately make him an obvious choice.
So, what did Inter Miami see in him?
And perhaps even more importantly, how much did his relationship with Messi matter?
Inter Miami needed a change
The decision comes at a difficult moment for the club.
Guillermo Hoyos had taken over as interim head coach in April after Javier Mascherano stepped down. His start was extremely promising, but the team’s form eventually declined.
Inter Miami entered the latest coaching change after going five games without a victory, including four defeats and one draw. During that stretch, the team conceded 13 goals while scoring only seven.
The numbers are particularly surprising because Miami still has one of the most talented squads in MLS.
Lionel Messi remains the centerpiece of the project. Rodrigo De Paul is also part of the team, while the club added another major name in Casemiro during the summer.
Despite all that talent, something was not working.
Inter Miami remains near the top of the Eastern Conference, but the recent results created enough concern for the club to decide that another change was necessary.
And that is where Kily González enters the story.
Who is Kily González?
Cristian “Kily” González is not a stranger to Argentine football or to high-level competition.
Born in Rosario in 1974, González enjoyed a long career as a player, representing clubs such as Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, Real Zaragoza, Valencia and Inter Milan.
His time in Europe was particularly important.
With Valencia, he won La Liga during the 2001-02 season and reached the Champions League final. He later moved to Inter Milan, where he was part of the squad that won Serie A in 2005-06.
González also represented Argentina for a decade, earning 56 international appearances between 1995 and 2005.
But his coaching career is a different story.
He has managed clubs in Argentina, including Rosario Central, Unión and Platense. However, compared with some of the names that could have been considered for a club with Inter Miami’s ambitions, his managerial résumé is relatively modest.
That is precisely why his appointment has attracted so much attention.
The Messi connection is impossible to ignore
There is one detail that makes this decision particularly interesting.
Kily González and Lionel Messi share much more than an Argentine nationality.
They are both from Rosario, Argentina.
González also crossed paths with Messi during their time with the Argentine national team. Their connection goes back to the period when Messi was beginning to establish himself at the international level.
That relationship has become one of the main talking points surrounding González’s appointment.
Some reports have suggested that his familiarity with Messi played an important role in Inter Miami’s decision.
But that does not necessarily mean Messi chose the coach.
That distinction is important.
Guillermo Hoyos, who knows Messi and his family well, recently addressed the subject and said that a player of Messi’s stature naturally has influence within a club. He compared the situation to other major clubs where important players may be consulted about potential coaching decisions.
Still, there is a difference between being consulted and making the final decision.
And Inter Miami has not said that Messi personally requested González.
Why the connection could matter on the field
Even if Messi did not choose González, having a coach who already understands him could be valuable.
Messi is no longer the young player who needs to adapt to every new system. At this stage of his career, the challenge is finding an environment that allows him to maximize his influence while managing his physical demands.
A coach who already knows his personality, his football background and his Argentine culture could potentially make that transition easier.
And there is another interesting factor.
González comes from Rosario, the same city that shaped Messi’s early football life.
That does not guarantee success, of course.
But at a club where Messi’s influence extends far beyond what happens during 90 minutes, familiarity can be an important advantage.
Inter Miami’s biggest problem is not Messi
There is another reason why the appointment of González deserves attention.
Inter Miami’s recent problems have not simply been about Messi’s performances.
The team has scored 49 goals in MLS, tied for the league’s highest total, but it has also conceded 40. That defensive imbalance has become one of the team’s biggest weaknesses.
That tells us something important.
Inter Miami does not necessarily need another coach to make Messi produce more attacking football.

It needs a coach who can help the entire team become more balanced.
The club can already create chances.
It can already score.
The bigger question is whether González can make Miami more compact and reliable defensively without limiting the attacking freedom that makes the team dangerous.
That could ultimately determine whether this appointment works.
Kily González arrives under enormous pressure
There is no doubt that González will have a difficult job.
Inter Miami is not a normal MLS project anymore.
The presence of Messi has completely changed the expectations surrounding the club. Every coaching decision is analyzed differently, every poor result creates headlines, and every season is measured against the possibility of winning trophies.
González will also become another name in an increasingly long list of coaches who have worked with Messi in Miami.
For the Argentine star, another coaching change means another tactical adjustment.
For the club, however, it represents something bigger.
It is another attempt to find the right structure around its greatest player.
What happens next?
González will officially take over once his U.S. work permit is completed. Until then, Hoyos remains involved during the transition.
That means the first real test for González will not simply be winning games.
It will be showing that Inter Miami made the right decision.
The club has already demonstrated that it is willing to make major changes when the results do not match its ambitions.
Now comes the intriguing part.
Was Kily González chosen because he is the coach Inter Miami believes can take the team to another level — or because he is one of the coaches who understands Lionel Messi better than most?
Perhaps the answer is somewhere in between.
